Margot Wallström's Statement
on Ingrid Betancourt's Liberation

I would like to extend my best wishes to Ingrid Betancourt whose six-year captivity in the FARC-controlled areas of the  Colombian jungle was ended July 2, 2008, in a daring rescue. We have all been following her dramatic story since  her kidnapping and through the different attempts to free her.

We all celebrated the moment we saw her free and able to join her family, friends, and supporters. Ms. Betancourt has provided her country with great leadership, serving as a Representative, Senator, and Presidential candidate of Colombia. Before her capture, she spent years working towards peace negotiations between the FARC and the government.

Just hours after her rescue, she spoke eloquently about her continued resolve to work towards peace and stability in her native country and to ensure freedom for all the hostages who continue to suffer. Whether Ms. Betancourt continues in politics or pursues projects elsewhere, she will no doubt remain a symbol of women's leadership.
